    Thank you @Ayr_Rage

Have managed to add side panel to toolbar.  It isn't the original version, but works at right-hand side of screen.

Hoping when my Chrome version updates, the original side-panel will return.

    Much appreciated

@libra I wouldn't hold your breath, after the updates to Chrome on my two laptops, one running Windows 10 the other on 11, all I have now is the two overlapping stars which when I hover the mouse pointer over the icon says "Bookmarks".

The left/right option for Side Panel is still in setting and operates the same.

Chrome used to be a great browser to use, but recently not so good.

I regularly save (and delete) bookmarks.  You used to just click the star and choose a short name to call the bookmark.  Now you have to click 'edit', then delete and rename.  Just small things, but unnecessary.

With the Chrome side panel, you can only order bookmarks in certain ways.  I wanted them ordered in date order, now that isn't possible, you have to choose one of their ways.

Going back several years, Internet Explorer worked well for me.  Simple, straightforward, and did everything I wanted.

    Rant over  :)

    Update
Have managed to restore the original side panel, which was removed in a March update.
There was a small article in Computer Active magazine, which I was reading this morning.
In Chrome flags you click on ' side panel navigation and pinning updates', and select 'disabled'.
    The side panel returns!
Thanks for suggestions and help, much appreciated.
