Many thanks @MrsStepford - this saves a lot of checking!

    I'm particularly amused by
La Espanola Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1L 10.50, Price Lock, Ocado
La Espanola Extra Virgin Olive Oil 750ml was 12.90 now 10.90, Ocado
    - why would anyone buy the 750ml?

Cold pressed rapeseed oil is a good choice for frying etc. if you want a neutral flavour.  I wouldn't use industrially processed rapeseed/vegetable oil, although that's a bit hypocritical as I do buy some processed foods and they nearly all use rapeseed oil.  I try to go with 80/20 - home cooking most of our food with simple, healthy ingredients and trying not to worry about the odd convenience food and/or treat.
  • I really cut down my use of olive oil when it now seems to be in the category of luxuries like smoked salmon!  It's a shame because it is more healthy and now it costs so much I am using vegetable oil or rapeseed oil.  I also use the oil in sun dried tomato jars and anything else packed in oil (but not sardines as you get a fishy flavour).

I prefer to use cold pressed rapeseed oil for cooking. It's much cheaper than olive oil and doesn't have such a strong taste. Because it's cold pressed, it also means it isn't refined (which most olive oils except extra virgin will be). Cold pressed rapeseed oil also tends to be produced in the UK which is also probably better for the environment compared to olive oil which is shipped over from southern Europe.

Asda Extra Special cold pressed rapeseed oil is £3.95 for 500ml - which is cheaper than olive oil. Branded versions of cold pressed rapeseed oil are often on sale as well (for example Yellow Mellow, Hillfarm, or Borderfields).

Extra virgin olive oil is best used on salads. It's a bad idea to cook with it because it has a low smoke point which I believe is not good for you.

Nina Teicholz is the author of The Big Fat Surprise. She talks about the processing of industrial seed oils and her book and YouTube videos were eye-openers to me. I wouldn't cook with the stuff. If I want a neutral oil I use avocado.

In many countries rapeseed is known as Canola as the Canadians discovered a way to make rapeseed non-toxic to humans, back in the 1950s.

I couldn't find any prices for Lidl olive oil online.

Seed oils are not toxic. This has been debunked:

Cold pressed rapeseed contains a higher ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 which the Zoe article suggests is important.

The 1L bottle won’t stand up in my cupboard! But I do buy whichever they have on offer, it’s usually one or other.

    Oh dear….olive oil 🫒!!!!

my sister from abroad in December 2023 warned me that the price of olive oil was going to rise, there had been an announcement by their government.
Theirs went up on the 1st of January 2924 due to a loss of crop.

The olive oil that we can now buy it’s the 2023 crop oil.

However she told me… buy some bottles and stock up!

    ME? Stock up? Olive oil?

No I said, no need as I only use it for dressing on salads ( we eat salad with our main dishes every day) .
I buy my olive oil from lidl because it’s accessible and on my way from work.

But I was quite taken aback when I saw the price when I had to go and buy some more…my eyes could not believe it. I grin and bear it and I buy a bottle thinking of my sister and her advice.
I still bought it but I have started using now less to wain off my family from the dreaded expensive stuff as salad dressing. It’s expensive.

Groundnut oil is another name for peanut oil. It has a pretty neutral taste and is often used for frying. I'd absolutely use for things like baking too - in bread, or brownies. I wouldn't drizzle it on salad. It's similar to sunflower or vegetable (rapeseed) oil in terms of smoke point, so I'd say it's closer to them than olive oil.

Depending on what you'd use olive oil for, it might be a good substitute from a culinary perspective - I'm not touching the various health claims by some people on this thread. Just be aware of any guests with peanut allergies if you use it.

I only use peanut oil for drizzling on homemade pizzas pre cooking as per James Martin and it has a lovely nutty flavour  but I’m sure it has other uses x
