Not responding to those that offered help for nearly 2 months has not helped you here.

What kWh usage does that £2000 represent, and over what time period?

What kWh usage (based on actual figures, not estimates) did you use in a comparable period when the meter was working?

Have you been paying a DD amount each month and does the £2000 take that into account?

Basically, you need to pay for the gas you've used, so you need to be able to articulate a sensible estimation of the gas you've used whilst the meter was not working. But, so does BG, and I assume the bill for £2000 actually does state what gas they have estimated you've used.

Oh, and tell your sister just not paying anything is probably not the best approach.

My sister in law has the same issue with her scottish power gas meter being blank and has been told she wont have to pay anything for the time its been blank because scottish power can't prove she has used any gas in that time!
That rumour often gets spread on other boards.  It does occasionally happen, but it isn't based on any logical principle.  The supplier is allowed to estimate how much you have used.

They have offered me £30 in compensation for not having a working meter for 9 months!  I think that is pathetic, but I'm not sure the ombudsman would give me much more?
    They might give you £50

So I'm very concerned they have estimated it and probably over estimated it by a long way.  I have done my own calculation and asked them to consider my estimate (lower than theirs) as the final reading.  They said they'd consider it but have not responded yet.
If it was estimated then you can ask for it to be reassessed based on actual readings from the replacement meter over an appropriate period.  You can't really just substitute your own guess without evidence though.
