Scottish Power charging to remove gas meter

Can anyone explain why Scottish Power think it is acceptable to charge over £200 to remove a gas meter that is no longer needed due to the house moving to all electric green heating. I believe other providers offer this service for free - it seems like profiteering to me

If SP have no obligation to remove the meter, why would they do this work for free?
  • They will continue to charge a daily standing charge until it is removed so it seems you can’t win either way

How much profit do you think they'll make?

If other providers do it for free, I'd recommend moving to them and getting them to do it for free.

Sounds like it might be worth switching to a Supplier who will disconnect your gas supply/remove the meter for free.  That Supplier would be paying for this work out of their own pocket though..so I can't imagine there are many Suppliers offering the service for free

I'm also not aware of any supplier offering this for free, mostly because as far as I'm aware most of the time with gas removals they pay the network provider to come out and actually do it.

And £200 seems remarkably cheap (I paid nearly that for a removal for a property back in 2014)

The only situation I can think of in which anything resembling them doing it for free would be if they were replacing it with a smart meter...

  • Scottish Power want to charge me nearly £1000.00 to remove a smart meter from an outhouse that is not used? How can this be right.

It would be the same charge if it was not a smart meter.

Unfortunately, that's the rules - if you want to stop paying the standing charge, you typically need to get the meter removed and the supply capped off. If someone else then wants it reconnected, they'll have to pay for that.

Who do you think should pay for it?

    Gas or electric ?

Meter only or immediate full supply disconnection if gas  ?

Are you planning building works necessitating disconnection etc

  • It’s electric and I cannot afford a £1000.00 as I am a pensioner. I would not mind paying if it was a reasonable amount but this is rediculous. If I don’t pay it I have a standing charge of £200.00 a month, how can I afford that!!!
  • 200/month standing charge ? You need to explain a little more
