I usually find there's not much difference in pricing between the main online companies. Sometimes, one place is cheaper for one item than another. However, you've got to keep an eye out for the postage costs - it can often cancel out the saving. Often if ordering many parts it's cheaper to order them all from the same place as it keeps the shipping cost down.

Just did a big order with Scan last night for a friend....

In the past I've ordered from Tekheads, Overclockers UK, Komplett and KustomPCs without problems. Tekheads and KustomPCs in particular seem to be staffed by nice people; always a good thing to keep in mind should something go wrong. :)

I agree that there's not always much difference price-wise between the various online outlets, and postage can sometimes be quite a surprise. On the other hand, keep a watchful eye on a few different sites and you're sure to find a bargain!

Apart from the above suggestions of checking individual sites (which is good practice as bargains do appear) i use pricerunner to find most bits and pieces (as they seem to have a good selection).

i also seem to remember there used to be a specialist computer comparison site, but don't have a link anymore. don't know wether antone else has this?

  • First thing to keep in mind that you do want the cheapest but if you are buying online, you also want the most hassle free experience and not all cheap companies will give that to you. We all have our favourite suppliers that offer a good balance between reliability and price. What I will say is to deal with a company that has stock availability on its website, good order tracking facilities and a good return policy.

overclockers.co.uk - been dealing with them for about 4 years now, very competitively priced and speedy delivery.

svp communications - devon good place for dvd recorders + media + paper etc. Very speedy delivery

komplett - not been dealing with them that often because they have become more expensive relative to the others

watford elec - if you plan on visiting their store, go for it but I won't be ordering online from them because I disagree with paying a premium to have them pull it out of stock...

Amazon electronics - surprise but I priced them for a Gigaworks S750 and they were the cheapest using lots of price comparison engines

dabs.com - not dealt with them for a while but they have a good return policy in that they send someone to pickup your item

ebuyer - already mentioned. Ok experience, quick delivery

dixons online store - order and collect. Works out well because the Dixons web prices are considerably less than instore

ebay - this is going to be a contentious one because my experience is that ebay is NOT the cheapest place to buy components unless you want to buy 2nd hand. If you use your price engines wisely, you will find that the other shops mentioned here tend to be cheaper than ebay and I also include ebay us on this as well. Ebay US is cheaper than Ebay UK however, in my opinion the difference is insufficient to compensate for the increased risk

Have used Komplett, dabs, ebuyer and overclock.co.uk without issue. Overclock.co.uk aren't always the cheapest but their service and support make up for it. Rather pay a couple of extra quid for quality and get things right first time, than be shafted by a cheap cowboy retailer. In that respect, had several problems with both aria and overclockers, mainly support and returns. They just didn't want to know.

A comparison site worth considering in your hunt for cheap components is http://www.computerprices.co.uk/uk/

I have used https://www.aria.co.uk and https://www.pcnextday.co.uk recently. I have found the latter better for postage costs too.

    regards,
    Crankup
