Tell him you're knocking 3 grand off the bill.
Sure, with absolutely no evidence and just a frankly obscene accusation. You can't just assume what might have happened.
    I was joking.

Not only were you obviously joking, but the cove who bit is the one who reckons it's ok to charge customers above retail cost for parts.

I had an incident when I lived and worked abroad.

Flat owner had a chap in to fix the water heater. One had to go through my bedroom to get to the bathroom. I had left my glasses on the bedside table.

When I went to get them, I found they were not there!

I thought about it and then said to the guy, straight in the eye.... "I AM SURE I LEFT MY GLASSES IN HERE ON THAT TABLE!"

Next time I went back in there, they were back again!

    Sometimes opportunist incidents do occur.

It is okay to charge customers above retail price for parts when you're having to guarantee the labour on fixing anything that goes wrong.

Indeed. But I don't think that applied in the case I was referring to.

It literally is how businesses work. They charge more than they pay. It's not rocket science.

I always think it is unlikely that the number of items stolen by tradesperson working in a property is as high as common narrative would suggest.

Any tradesperson would be rather foolish if they are the only one in a property to take £3k watch (or anything) as they know they will be instantly accused and, frankly, why would they want the hassle of that or the risk to their reputation?

A Plumber will earn a good, honest living.

My dad was a painter and decorator, he had several “ plants” throughout his career, a homeowner would leave cash or valuables lying around just to see if the tradesman would take it, he once moved a wardrobe and found money behind it, ( yes it could have fallen behind it) he just left it there as his job and reputation was more valuable..
  • Playing devil's advocate here.

Call in a plumber, claim that 3k of watches have been stolen. That would be a cheeky scam, wouldn't it?

It's your word against theirs. Both scenarios seem equally as ludicrous to me.

I think the lesson is, leave valuables in a safe unless using them....
