In theory the supplier should know. Depends on whether you want the advantages of having a smart meter, sooner, rather than later.

I dread power cuts.  I'm not sure how long but I think the power has to be off when smart meters are being fitted.

This is a genuine concern:  Being as careful, and strict, as I  am, I don't  think a smart meter would save me much, if anything on my energy bills.and, for me, would be a stressful transition.  The daily standing charges seem to be here to stay.  I am on The Priority  Services Register.  When the time comes, and there is no choice, I accept that I'll have to have gas and electric smart meters.
Battery back up in the form a a uninterruptable power supply is the way to go for your tech. But they need regular checks and replacement batteries.

Once you have a smart meter, you can pick a tariff like the Octopus Tracker or Agile, and shave a few pounds off your bill. I'm also a low energy user and had been paying ~£100 per month on the standard variable tariff. Switched to Tracker, and am now down to £65 without cutting back on energy. Gas is 4.1p/kWh and electricity, 19.9pkWh today in the Eastern region (was 12.2p on Saturday). Looks like I'll be paying an average of 18.5p for electricity, and 3.9p for gas this month.

Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

I've heard that you can have tracker and agile for gas, but there's not variation  in price throughout the day. So what's the difference?

Tracker is for gas and/or electricity.. rate changes every day. Agile is for electricity where rate changes every half hour. I'm on Tracker for gas and Agile for electricity.
