Hi everyone,

I had an item for sale on Facebook Marketplace (DJ decks) which yesterday a lady asked if she could buy as long as I posted it to an address in the UK as it was a surprise gift for her cousin. She was offering the full asking price plus extra for postage.

The lady asked me for confirmation of the price, bank details and my email then said she was going to pay by bank transfer. I received an email from Cashplus Bank with the Cashplus Business logo at the top and all the agreed payment details including my bank account number, asking me to reply to the email with a postage receipt for immediate credit into my account.

One thing that jumped out was the email address to reply to is (Removed by Forum Team) @gmail.com. A business bank using a Gmail account? To me that doesn’t look quite right.

I don’t want to post the item, send a copy of the postage receipt, then discover it’s a scam. Their customer service line is open 8am Monday so I will wait to call them. The lady buyer is adamant it’s all above board and her Facebook profile looks genuine.

Has anybody else had experience of being paid for a private sale item with Cashplus?

Thanks a lot,

Chris

I wouldn't go near a bank using a gmail address find another buyer. I would preferably sell local cash on pickup

The use of a gmail address is a certain indication it is a fake email. A reputable bank will always have their own domain.

You're correct to be dubious - they're attempting to scam you. No legit bank would send emails from a gmail address.

Either sell the item in person locally, using cash or paypal or utilise a trading platform like eBay or Vinted to ensure you're better protected.

As everyone else has stated red flags are waving, alarm bells are ringing and I think an air raid siren might be going off.

Looking at the banks website they have at least one email address showing, which is their own domain name so why use Gmail unless it's a scammer.

Isn't it possible that the scammer is using somebody else's Facebook profile?

Telling you that payment will only be made on showing a postage receipt is another red flag, as is asking the parcel to be sent to a third party.

Don't waste your time and theirs, cease all communication, DO NOT mail the item.

    Evolution, not revolution
  • Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I have cancelled the sale and as eDicky said I won’t waste my time contacting the bank.
