I don't like the HSBC set up for payment.
Most cards I pay via debit card, the cards payment is shown straight way with thanks for payment, When I paid the HSBC via bank transfer it didn't show as paid till the next day.
HSBC doesn't show transactions till the next day, either. Unlike Lloyds, Halifax, and Barclays, etc, who show transactions immediately.
  • Completely sympathise with OP. I have four credit card providers and every single one can be paid off instantly via mobile banking. It is unheard of to have a 30 day direct debit process set up by post. This is the antithesis of everything MSE stands for, helping people manage their credit and debts effectively. IMO they shouldn't be recommending HSBC credit cards until the bank moves out of the telegram era.

Some of us have no interest in mobile banking. Direct debits have worked satisfactorily for  very long time. Accessing my bank account every couple of week on line is more than adequate.

The information in that post is incorrect.
It has been confirmed that HSBC credit cards can be paid using methods including mobile banking and Direct Debit.

HSBC updates the available balance immediately; Barclaycard also does essentially the same thing as it shows the payment as pending rather than finalised until the next day.

All the details needed to pay a HSBC credit card can be found at https://www.hsbc.co.uk/help/card-support/credit-card-repayment-options/

This includes an online form if you wish to pay by direct debit
  • Just to clarify some point here:- (As i was having to deal with HSBC today on this issue)

If you ONLY hold a HSBC credit card, and you don't have a current account with HSBC you CANNOT pay your credit card bill via their Mobile Banking App. (despite what their own website says).
    - You can see only see your statements, balances, due dated etc but NOT PAY IT!

    - This was confirmed by the nice lady at the complaints department, what you will get is a message which says "you either have an incorrect account, or your personal details are incorrect followed by an "error code"  like CDD1DD1". - i assumed my personal details were incorrect...which turn out wasn't the case.

Thankfully they sorted my issue out, but they also said they were "working on it".ie it's a known issue.
    - given that one of the T&C's on their current Balance transfer card is that you don't hold an account with them, and the app is requirement for online banking, they really need to sort their stuff out, and move into the modern age.

Given they don't take debit card payments; I wouldn't expect to pay them via the app without another HSBC account to transfer funds across from.

Their mobile app is preferred but optional for online banking as they can give you a physical Secure Key instead.
