card readers

How compatible are card readers from different banks? My RBS card reader is complaining about a low battery. I tried changing batteries but either the new ones are faulty or I did something wrong as it didn't work after I had changed.

I've just got (as part of their switching offer)  a card reader from NatWest which I think is identical to the RBS one.I'm expecting it to work for RBS.

I've also got a reader from Barclays. That might also work for RBS, but the buttons are named differently so I would have to check how they relate.

Most are compatible. E.g. Barclays, Ulster, NatWest/RBS, Co-op, Lloyds and Nationwide. Some like First Direct and maybe HSBC are different

All mine say Identify, Respond and Sign, some may differ I suppose

The only one that is radically different is that for M&S credit card.  The rest work mostly the same but as you've noticed with different names occasionally.  Given that RBS & NatWest are the same group they should be fine.

you should be able to contact RBS and ask them to send you a new one. it usually takes about 10 days to arrive
  • If it doesn't say "wrong card" when you put it in, it should work, though as you say the buttons may look a bit different

I've just used an old RBS card reader for my Ulster and Natwest cards.

Or wander into the local branch (if you have one) and see if they have one there. I know that my local Nationwide branch keeps a supply on hand for their customers. (Incidentally, I know for certain that Nationwide/RBS/NatWest/Ulster Bank ones are interchangeable. I've used ones from all of those with accounts from others. I habitually use a NatWest one with my Nationwide account.)

Or, if you're feeling cheeky, you could wander in to a Nationwide branch and ask for one of theirs.

I don't know why you've had trouble after replacing a battery. I did that once, and mine worked fine afterwards.

I tried twice. I think one set of batteries was actually faulty, not sure about the other. There aren't any RBS branches nearby, and I didn't want to order a new reader from them if the NatWest one I have just been sent would work, which it is now clear it does.

    Perhaps it's upside-down

Could be, but I'm usually good with getting them in the right way
