Intel Vs AMD

Hi
I was wondering if I could get a quick bit of advice. We are looking to pick up a cheap-ish Laptop in the sales, and have seen a good one, HP, 17" and plenty of spec with a big £200 reduction, but it has an AMD processor. Not knowing much about these things, I know that Intel is huge and everyone seems to recommend them. Would I be a fool to buy an AMD processor? It was a silver 64 x2 (I think). It's basically to do a bit of surfing, maybe some downloads and running some spreadsheets.
Sorry if this is a really dumb question!
thanks

It's a bit hard on the description provided - but I would suggest that it should be able to cope with what you want it to do.
Which model and where and how much?0 -
Wish I had some Intel shares! I have always thought that I would only buy any kind of computer if it had Intel but someone on here will know better than me.0

I have an AMD Turion 64 x 2 processor and it very good. IIRC it is equivilent to the upper end of Intel in terms of performance. There are differences in the way they work and some process date in a different way to others but I am assured that most users will not know the difference between one and the other.
I used to be very suspicous of anything other than Intel but both our laptops are AMD processors, as was the one that has been replaced. No complaints from our house. They even run the Sims 2 without problemsBehind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -

short answer is, AMD is fine for most purposes. If you needed to run high end apps or need to make the most of the very powerful chips intel are now producing then it has to be intel.
AMD will be absolutely fine for the tasks you state. In fact there are other things other than processor that are more important in these tasks such as RAM - get as much as possible!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. That is almost exactly the same laptop I am typing on now!
It is excellent. Mine even has remote control for watching DVDs. I absolutely love it.
Mine was priced at £599 from PC World, who are under the same ownership as Currys, so £499 is not bad.
If you go via quidco you get 5% cashback.
When you get it, buy some blank DVDs and create a recovery disk. You don't get recovery disks with it but you have the option of creating your own.
I say DVDs because you only need 1 or 2 of these - you would need 9 CDs to achieve the same task in CDsBehind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -
Should be fine for surfing and basic office work, however if you intend playing any decent 3d games or video encodeing ect i would go for a C2D intel instead0
