Marshmallow - cancelled my insurance and then refused to honour 14 day free cancellation right

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  I signed up with Marshmallow through Money Supermarket.  There was no drop down box for my job title, I couldn’t get in touch with them/only bots for customer service, so I chose the next most relevant job which my job also covers, but I am actually a Supervisor of that role.  They required my work ID.  They contacted me a week later to say they will cancel my policy as the job title doesn’t match exactly to my ID copy.
I tried but could not get in touch with anyone to discuss/explain, so I repied that I wish to therefore cancel the policy as it is within the  14 days period.  They argue that they are charging me the full cancellation fee of approx £130 as my job title was inaccurate.

Could anybody please enlighten me as to if this is legitimate?

The cancellation rights period is not a free period.   They can charge their published cancellation charge and any premium for the period you were on cover on a pro-rata basis. e..g if after 10 days you cancel, then they can charge 10 days premium plus the cancellation charge.

  • In 30+ years of buying car insurance I don’t think I’ve ever had an exact match for my job title.  It’s also been common for me to have at least 2 sometimes 3 official ways of describing my job. For instance what I might write officially on a contract (a project role) might be different to what HR would pull out of my company system, both of which would be different to several uk professional registrations I hold…. Yours can’t be an uncommon situation - could you not have persevered in making direct contact?
That being said, I agree with the above response if you just went ahead & cancelled.

A cooling off period is a right to cancel not that it has to be fee free. In principle after the cooling off period you have no statutory right to cancel at all but in practice some classes, eg Motor, will always allow cancellations as they dont want to be the insurer on record after you sell it etc. In come classes, eg Private Medical, it's common for there to be no cancellations post cooling off.

What is your job title? What title did you select?
