  • Whats 'slightly better' about the extreme versions?
The short answer is that they are much faster but they are also more reliable (better build quality), they come with software to undelete files on the card and come with a lifetime warranty.

Like a lot of things you pays your money and takes your choice I would however encourage everyone to check the speed of the cards they are buying, same with USB keys as sometimes you can get the same size but double the speed for 10p more etc.
  • I buy quite a few memory cards on a regular basis. They're mainly for photography -- every time I buy a new CF card the sweet point (price/capacity) has enabled me to double the capacity -- but also SD cards for mp3 players and even as a hard disk replacement.

I get only SanDisk and Kingston makes. I never buy from ebay or other dodgy suppliers. Kingston usually have a lifetime replacement on their cards, SanDisk 5 years.

The Extreme and Ultra may be faster, but only if you can make use of it. My camera -- a Canon 30D DSLR -- can't write faster than the basic speed, so I buy the slowest cards I can. It buffers 9 shots in RAW anyway, so capacity is more important to me than speed.

The faster ones probably could download to my PC faster, but I set 'em going then go have a coffee, so speed isn't a big deal to me there either!

Is there any way to beat the shipping charge or is this only a few pence cheaper than Play.com ?

Just to add that if you don't know which type of memory card is compatible with your camera, phone, device, etc, then the mymemory.co.uk website has a good selector tool:
