    You need a text or a phone call to log in. 
    To receive a text or phone call. Unless your provider is different to the norm, these are usually free to receive, even when abroad.

    I've received WiFi SMS messages with no problem from Vietnam, Thailand etc. I never use roaming

    Probably could, just not keen to give Vodafone any excuse to hit me with their stonking roaming charges for what is not really an exceptional need. Would need to swap physical SIM back into phone too. Nah, it can wait.
