I have been around many US states including Texas.
Texas is HUGE so you will need to be a little more specific with things such as:- how far you want to go
- what kind of things you want to see
My favourite cities as someone that has visited most parts of Texas:- Houston
- Dallas
- Forth Worth (love this place the most in Texas)
- San Antonio (for the Alamo if you are interested in that & other history)
I definitely recommend Big Bend national park and Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

Texas is probably one of my favourite states to have visited and as Texans love Texas so much, they tend to be very welcoming and friendly to visitors.
As @heatherw_01 says, the state is huge and there can be a lot of driving. If you can make it to Big Bend National Park, that is well worth visiting. Other favourites of ours were Fort Davis, Austin and Fort Worth - make sure to catch the Cattle Drive and visit Billy Bob's Honky Tonk."Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."1 -
I did a trip originating in Dallas/Fort Worth, on to Austin, San Antonio, and then Houston. If I recall correctly, we had 3 nights in each place.
I’m pretty sure we visited in October and our visit coincided with the Texas State Fair which is held in Dallas. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen before - everything really is supersized (and deep fried!)!
Austin is home to the Texas State Capitol which is worth a free tour. You can also watch the bats flying out from under Congress bridge (google it for more info!).
I loved San Antonio. As a previous poster said, it has the Alamo, and the river walk is wonderful. We also had a great time at Ranger Creek Brewstilery (beer and bourbon).
By the time we got to Houston we were a little city fatigued, so we got out the city and day-tripped to Galveston and another day at the Johnson Space Centre. I wasn’t convinced I was going to be enthralled by the space centre but I really enjoyed it.
We didn’t have time to visit the Texas National Parks, but having been to a number of other NPs in the US I am sure they are amazing.

Thanks for the replies we were originally looking at two weeks. visiting the wifes niece near Houston for a few days then Austin and through the hill country stopping off somewhere then to San antonio then port Aransas and finishing in Galveston. We will look at some of the places you have mentioned and try to fit some in. I think the big bend national park is too far. We are maybe thinking of stopping for three weeks now and going to New Orleans as its somewhere we would like to go and although its a fair distance we could fit it in . Is Fredericksburg worth a visit and has anyone been to a rodeo and where was it ?0

Internal flights are quite reasonable, could you change your homeward flight to a different airport? We have been to two rodeos but one was in Pendleton WA and one was the Calgary Stampede so only a sort of rodeo....0

Fredericksburg is definitely worth a visit. The town itself is quite small but has a different look and feel to other small Texas towns due to the German influence. It is also home to one of the best museums I have ever visited, the National Museum of the Pacific War.1
