Bathroom fan - can I get a refund?

Hi all,

I've had a bathroom fitted with the last 4 weeks which included fitting a new ceiling fan that has ducting in the loft to the eaves.

After fitting by the sparky, I went in to the roof to pop the ducting out of the ceiling in the roof while doing this for some reason the ducting itself split. It didn't seem to be made from any decent material. I contacted them asking asking for a replacement (with a picture of the hole in the ducting) as I thought that it was not satisfactory quality and last a reasonable amount of time. They said they couldn't give me one as they had none and told me to go to B&Q and buy some ducting and replace it myself. I then asked for a refund under CRA and they gave me a response saying stuff about their warranty and terms of service doesn't cover it and it's my fault as I caused the damage. I don't think moving any of the ducting in the roof was unreasonable? So far they've been reluctant to do anything and I'm getting to the end of my tether with them.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Sorry but what were you trying to achieve?  Should that have been done before installation was complete?

Are you actually the customer here?  Did you buy the fan kit or did the installer?

If you are the customer, you'll need to dismantle the broken part, take it to the retailer and get them to look at it.  They don't have to issue a replacement on the strength of a photo.

If you're not the customer, the resolution would be provided by whoever supplied the part, but they may push back as well.

Not sure why you went to move the ducting but are we talking about a £5 piece of ducting ?

How much of a refund were you asking for?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Hello OP

Technically probably yes but as above the ducting is so cheap IMHO it's not worth the headache if the company don't want to help.

The Sparky is under no obligation to do anything.

You've tampered with the installation and by your own admission it has caused the ducting to become damaged.

The ducting would have been of satisfactory quality, had you of left it in place. It wouldn't simply break by itself.

If you wanted the installation to be changed in any way, you should have asked the Sparky to do it.

How can a tradesmen guarantee works if within weeks the client is messing with it?

To then go and ask them to pay for a replacement! I'd be blocking your number at this point....

A refund for what? The ducting? The whole job? If the latter, are you removing and handing back all the kit they fitted?

Why are you messing with the ducting? What were you trying to achieve?
Or is this something that was already in place before sparky fitted fan?

Flexible ducting is never the strongest stuff & very easy to hole if not careful.

I see there are some pretty hostile people on here it seems.

I am the customer, I supplied the fan and the fitter had his sparky fit it (while fitting the rest of the bathroom) and decoration was done after the fitting.

I am messing with the ducting because I needed to pop the chrome grate of at the end of the ducting that sits in the ceiling out of the ceiling so I could paint the ceiling behind the chrome grate hence the touching of the ducting.

Just to be clear, I am not trying to push anything on to the sparky here.

I initially asked for a replacement but they said they had no spare parts or anything.

As the sparky fitted the whole lot. it I don't really want to mess around with it myself by replacing the ducting myself even if I got.

After a bit of back and forth they've come back with asking about quotes to get the ducting replaced but then again I need to go out and then get quotes from multiple people and it seems a bit of a faff.

Probably best to leave it there.
