Idiotic government to thank, hopefully when they're kicked out Labour might change it back?

I believe my old BMW 320d is staying on £30 a year but a newer EV moves onto the £180 band? My leaf is moving up to £20, i'd happily pay £180 for nice roads though.

I really can't see a mass adoption of 50 year old classic cars as daily drives. The ones I know of rarely do more than a couple of hundred miles a year which is irrelevant in terms of the environment.

Am I correct in thinking that any EVs with a sticker price of over £40k will also attract the balance of the 6 years of luxury car tax in 2025? Isn't that going to be most of them?

AIUI only new cars registered after the change.
Hope that is how it is.

EDIT - @Spies got me thinking / alarmed, so I went to have a look and this seems like official rules:
    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/introduction-of-vehicle-excise-duty-for-zero-emission-cars-vans-and-motorcycles-from-2025/introduction-of-vehicle-excise-duty-for-zero-emission-cars-vans-and-motorcycles-from-2025

"The Expensive Car Supplement exemption for EVs is due to end in 2025. New zero emission cars registered on or after 1 April 2025 will be liable to pay the expensive car supplement where eligible"

So, the expensive car part is not applied retrospectively to EV's already registered.
The way things are going, every desirable car will be liable for expensive car supplement by 2025 - fiscal drag again.

The anomaly that pre-2017 low-CO2 cars continue to qualify for the £30 VED remains.  I would raise the issue to my MP as an absurdity.  I suspect, if the query gained any traction at all, the solution to equalise would be to charge drivers of older low-CO2 cars the standard rate of VED rather than to exempt EV's or match EV's to the £30 rate.  On that basis, probably best left silent.
  • I have missed out this in March 2024. Can I do the same in March 2025? Am I correct to think it will still be £0 when I renew my EV Road tax in March 2025?

I believe that will be the case.

The whole point of renewing in March 2024 was that the EV road tax will still be £0 in March 2025.  So you should be able to renew for £0 in March 2025 unless the Government spots the loophole and closes it.

Under current legislation, that is correct.

However, it's theoretically possible that rules could be changed such that anyone renewing before April 2025 would be charged for some months at nil and months from April at new rate.

I renewed, at the weekend, and it was zero for 12 months. So they haven't changed the rules, yet.
