Indeed - people's usage is what defines a language, not a set of prescriptive rules. Even dictionaries (which most people view as authoritative) are descriptions and definitions of how language is actually used - words and definitions don't make it into the dictionary without evidence of them being in natural usage.martindow said:

Spelling in English wasn't standardised until 1755, Welsh has been changed many times with several changes put in in the 1880s to make printing easier (eg Trefelin became Trevelin), the letter J is an even newer adoption from the English.
