While on my Monday man, why do supermarkets and many shops insist we have to self-scan,
None in our area insist.  At least not the ones I go to. Its optional.   However, maybe there will come a time when those that do not self scan will pay a surcharge for the extra cost.

.the entire retail sector appears to be obsessed with removing people from the point of purchase. It a race to automation that will have serious implications for the school leavers of the 2020's...
No change in implications for school leavers to anyone alive today.    Every professional/occupation has had computerisation/automation for over 100 years.    The jobs move to other areas.  Such as IT or into roles that AI/Tech cannot do. Or service roles.

Whilst there has been a race to dumb down and lower costs, businesses also focus on personalised service.  But they cost more.

In your case, it would be a traditional bank or building society that is more likely to give you the service you want but you don't want to use them as you want the lower cost option.   And that is the quandry.

Did you check if the account you were interested in can be operated as an Attorney - as not all accounts will allow this - especially savings accounts?  There's usually a separate procedure to follow for Attorney managed accounts and you'd need to ensure that it was an option before applying.  I've been an active Attorney for 2 different family members and whilst having an LPA in place can make things possible, they don't always make them easy.

And a Donor/Attorney style account is somewhat specialist and perhaps outside the more routine arrangements that MSE perhaps highlights or champions.
