Water Metre

Options
We have lived in our house for over 20 years, About 18 months ago our water company said we had to have a water meter fitted. But last year (2023) and now this year have received the annual letter from the water company telling us the cost of this year's water.  If the company put in a meter, why aren't our water bills metered?

    Was the meter actually fitted?

You maybe be inclined not to chase it up if the fact that are still charging you the "rates" is to your benefit, however I am not sure if they would be able to backdate the readings once they spot their error, so its up to you really.

Yes it was fitted 18 months ago, it seems a lot of people say being metered is cheaper, and I would of course like to pay less, its difficult to know what would be best

In which case I would be contacting them straight away and ask why are they billing you under the old method when they put a water metre in. Nothing to gain by waiting tbh. I would also be asking about them backdating it.

Why don’t you read the meter and calculate what the metered water should be costing, and compare that with how much you’ve been billed, and then decide whether to chase up the water company.

Isn't that how most metered services operate ?  Projected cost per coming year/month based on last years usage.

We  get an annual letter from United Utilities telling us how much water we used, how much we paid (for the last 12 months) and how much they would collect per coming month for the next 12 months

I read it as he was still receiving a bill based on no water meter, e.g. ratable value. Maybe the OP needs to clarify this.

Ring them as soon as possible then, if you are 100% sure its to your advantage to be on a meter you have no disadvantage by telling them ASAP. And make sure you ask them to backdate their error.
