Wouldnt you have to book two tickets in your own name? Not sure if that is even possible using the online form, it may spot both passengers have the same name and reject it.0

Just tried it, yes it lets you get all the way to the payment screen with two passengers with the same name.
They arent going to let you pay for one ticket and then buy two seats, Im afraid. I wouldnt risk leaving the seat allocation to Easyjet at the point of check in as they may assign both seats in separate rows.0 -
I think for something like this you are better to call the airline.0

As @Westin says you need to contact easyJet customer service, as advised on their website Choosing a seat | easyJetSeat SizesMinimum pitch: 28 inches / 71cm
Minimum width: 16 inches / 40.5 cm
If you think this size might be difficult for you (such as special medical requirements, a broken leg, or if you are of a large build), then you may need to buy an additional seat. This can be done by contacting our Customer Service team.

Assuming that the route is covered, how does the cost of two economy class seats with a budget airline compare with the cost of one business class seat on a full-service airline?0

Not direct from the horse's mouth, but this outlines the booking procedure:On the easyJet site it describes booking an extra seat for when you are in plaster so the same rules should apply.

I travel frequently with the wife on EasyJet and always book an extra seat for myself/comfort being a stocky 6ft 6. I’ve always booked the third seat/comfort seat online within the same reservation. The comfort seat I also put in my name and add my passport information against both reservations. I also prepay/reserve seats to ensure the 3 seats together etc. When I check-in online, I always print all my boarding cards. On the boarding card for the comfort seat (still in my name) I write the following; EXST - NON MEDA. Previously being in the airline industry for 20years this text means extra seat - non medical. It’s airline talk for extra seat due to personal comfort (more space needed 😉)
I’ve never had an issue when doing this. On the odd occasion I’ve been asked why the extra seat and I politely answer I don’t fit in a single seat!
I hope this helps. This is solely my experience with EasyJet. I’m aware other low cost or even schedule airlines have alternative/specific booking arrangements for extra seat.4 -

In my experience it’s always cheaper to purchase the extra seat compared to business class. For comparison, yesterday I booked a trip to Rome for my wife and myself. The return fare on EasyJet from Gatwick (closer to me) with an extra seat for comfort (total 3 seats brought), seat reservation paid on both sectors for all seats and 1x checked in bag cost cost me £475. Similar timed flights with BA in business class from LHR) would have cost me £815.
The difference saved covered my hotel for the duration of our stay plus a bit of spending money.1 -

Your reasons are same as mine. Thanks again.0
