I’m fairly certain I’ve transferred from MBNA to Halifax in the last few months…

Perhaps you can, their respective websites don't particularly well articulate whether they can or cant:

    Halifax:
You can’t transfer from all cards – it’s not possible to transfer balances between cards issued by the same provider. For example, you can’t transfer between Halifax credit cards.

    MBNA:
A balance transfer must be to a different provider than your existing credit card. So, for example, you can’t balance transfer between MBNA credit cards.

I personally wouldn't rely on either to transfer from the other, as either could potentially argue they would be transferring from the same 'provider' (which is a bit vague), unless I had written assurance it'd be OK.

Lloyds Banking Group do allow transfers between their brands. I was told this explicitly by their customer services, and have done several transfers between Lloyds and Halifax cards.

What about between Bank of Scotland and Halifax?

MBNA is part of Lloyds but you may be able to do it, I've done Lloyds CC to Halifax CC fine
    HSBC are completely separate

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
