I have just bought my daughter a car (her test is in 3 weeks)

I will be picking it up next week, so it will need to be taxed / insured

How does the insurance work
The car will be in my daughters name
I will be driving it home

I have a fully comp insurance that does state

"may also drive with the owners permission a motor car that is not owned by or registered to, or hired, rented or leased to, them"

I would presume this means I will be insured to drive her car home

But as it needs to be taxed, I am also presuming just a temporary  2 hour cover will suffice
(I don't know if the dealer offers drive away insurance - I forgot to ask)    just to get it home and then sort out insurance for her

Can anyone advise
Thanks

The "drive other cars" term doesn't usually allow you to be actually owner or keeper. Also it only give you 3rd party cover, so if an accident occurred that was your fault, you wouldn't be able to get the car repaired via the insurers.

Best you get some temporary cover.

It doesn't need to be insured in order to tax it, so your plan sounds fine.

Remember up until the second you get in until the second you get out it is not insured and will likely be 3rd party only. Also many of the driving any vehicle clauses state the car must be insured by the owner alongside the 3rd party cover. So check it carefully.

It will be parked off road when you get it home I assume?

Drive away insurance is usually available to the new registered keeper which I assume will be your daughter who won't have a full license which will probably be a pre-requisite.

Maybe look at one of the short term policies from the like of Marmalade for your daughter and then she can drive it home with you as the passenger and use it for practice up to her test.

Yes, it will be on a secure driveway at our home
I've looked at temporary insurance, so happy to get that as it's only about £20

It will be a Birthday gift for my daughter so a surprise

Veygo won't insure me as a temporary driver, as there isn't insurance already on that car

    I believe that is wrong!

You believe wrong, the requirement to have valid insurance was removed several years ago.

According to multiple places on the Internet it needs to have insurance in place to tax a car

Insurance is not necessary for tax.
It only needs to have a valid MOT.
As soon as it is taxed it lifts the SORN (or pulls it out of "in-trade"), flags as uninsured and starts the timer for the £100 fine (Kerching!!!)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Old info. Check the current Post Office info on what is required to tax a vehicle, insurance is not listed.
