My elderly dad who is 85 next month paid £516 for 10 months on a new (second hand) car.  I have been trying to compare for him and they all are quoting around the £1k mark?  The cheapest I can find so far is £898.11. I don't know if we can do any better?  He may be considered high risk for his age but he is in fact very good for his age and only drives part time.  We put in 2000 mileage but if that.  He uses buses a lot but for places you need a car for at relatives homes, etc.  It's kept securely in a garage as well.  I'm not sure about one detail which needs to be accurate but I will clear that with him.  He is 2.5 weeks away from renewal date.
Have you added yourself as another driver, that may help and could be useful in an emergency.
    ^^this^^
My DD only started driving in her late 30's, and her insurance was significantly cheaper with me as a named driver.

No I haven’t.  I might try that and see if any difference to quote. I doubt he’d let me drive it though. Does that not matter for insurance purposes?

No. You're just legally covered by the insurance. They don't ask if/when you might drive it!

I just tried it but actually came up more expensive, not less weirdly.

    Oh well, worth a try.
Maybe the main driver is just of an age where he is statistically much more likely to be involved in a claim. That and the general trend pushing up insurance costs anyway.

I tried that and it didn't work for me either. I'm 83

I bumped my milage up to 7000 from 5000 and that did

I'm now with Tesco the cheapest

Thank you.  More mileage cheaper?  I’ve got some clearer details now so I’ll try again tomorrow.

Yep - age plus low mileage = doddering old sod as my father would say 😄

Illustrates how you can play the statistics game to your advantage. The difficulty is figuring out which criteria to change. Insurance companies are not very forthcoming in how they calculate premiums!
