    Hi Karrie
Does your DVD recorder have a built in tuner? It probably does just like the old video recorded had and when you tune it in you are picking up the TV channels in the recorder not from your TV. If that is the case you need a DVD recorder which also has built in freeview to get all the freeview channels on it for recording.

This is the set up I have at home so that I can be watching one freeview programme and recording another.

Can you maybe change your DVD recorder for another one which has Freeview also?

It would be helpful if you identified the make and model of DVD recorder and TV.

We too have a panasonic lcd with freeview and now a pansonic dvd recorder also with freeview, but that's a coincidence. Because I was concerned I might bigger these up if I set them up myself, I got the engineer to do it for me. It is worth the extra knowing that it is installed correctly, plus they also run through everything with you.

As an aside, it's great to run through the 7 day listing and highlite everything you want to see, and add an extra few minutes before and at the end of a programme in case it over runs, I simply then forget it.

Yes I may watch what I'm actually recording, but I do so in the knowledge that if the phone rings or someone calls, it is being recorded, then when they've gone, I simply go to the recorder and watch from where I left off, and it is still recording to the end and I am watching it 5mins or whatever, behind the live broadcast.

Hi CS - yes its a good idea to get one with built in freeview - makes life a lot easier - it is possible to record from the freeview built into the telly but very complicated and you would not be able to watch one channel while recording another.

Panasonic DVD recorders are generally seen as one of the best, with an easy to follow on screen menu. If you don't want one which also plays DVD and allows you to Dub onto DVD then a Humax PVR would be what I would be going for looking at reviews on those. They are a recorder with tuner and hard drive but no DVD drive

Whilst we're on this subject and whilst I'm still learning, would I be able to view a dvd AND record a programme at the same time?, we have a pansonic dvd recorder

You will only be able to do this if your DVD recorder has a hard disk in it.
Where would you put the disk you want to record on whilst playing back another.
It is possible that you can do this when using DVD RAM disks however but I've never tried.

Yes, it does have a hard disc, in fact we only record to that and only if we really want to keep something will we transfer to disc. So, having said all that, I take it that any time we wish to record to hard drive we can at the same time, watch a disc.

In fact - you can also be recording a programme to the hard disk and watch a programme already recorded to hard disk at the same time
