Sounds like you are getting enhanced redundancy so more than the statutory minimum which is good news.
That does not make sense, the OP stated they were told they would be getting government and company. Let's say the company pays two weeks for each year of service, my understanding was that's it, this is not then topped up by the government with their statutory amount or am I wrong?

You're correct. Statutory redundancy is the, legal, minimum an employer must pay. The employer funds it, not the government*.

Either HR got it wrong, miscommunication, the OP misunderstood or they  define their redundancy package as equal to statutory redundancy plus extra

*Slight exception, AIUI, if the company wen't bankrupt in which case the taxpayer is on the hook for the payment

You don’t say how much service you have with the company but if they are paying enhanced redundancy then it’s worth finding out what the package is and maybe putting the prep in re looking for a new job eg getting your cv up to date, looking around at job opportunities and sitting tight for a while. You don’t want to jump ship too soon if there’s the prospect of a good pay out.

A month for each year, I have seven years of service.
  • It’s a shock to get the news that your role is redundant. Even if you’ve never needed to get any sort of external support to deal with your employment situation before, I’d recommend it now. It’s a stressful time and stuff can easily get missed. A union if you’re a member, or even of you’re not, unions can have some useful resources on their websites, worth checking. Citizens Advice have information online. Local authorities often have employment support now, at least for finding a new job, access to job search courses and support. Focus on getting everything sorted with your employer and your redundancy first, put yourself centre stage and then look to the future. Good luck!
