Hi Guys

im really in quite a situation.

i went away for a few weeks and accidentally left the bathroom hot water running on full.  Thankfully bath was unplugged so no overflow.

unfortunately my gas meter reading has gone up by a lot. This is an old building so I’m not sure exactly what sort of meter it is but it’s those old looking gas meters.

i haven’t told British Gas yet as I’m just paying estimates and Would like to keep it that way so as to avoid them increasing my direct debut by hundreds or whatever it is.

is there some way to find out rougly how much this will cost.  I saw a formulae online but I’m not very good at this.

lets say the meter goes up by a hundreds eg 100 or 400 or 600 units in 1 month, what would the cost be roughly for each.  Just want a rough idea.

This meter reading isn’t kWh but I believe it is units used in cubic meters or cubic feet according to online.  I’m any case can you give me some idea of what it might be based on whether it’s cubic feet or cubic meters or whatever.

It seems to me This could be thousands upon thousands as it’s gone up by hundreds :(

pleae let me know asap

Thanks

Any bill will show whether your meter is in cubic feet or cubic metres.

The calculation showing the conversion to kWh will also be on there.

If you have many bills only using estimated readings then you could already be well behind in payments, have those estimates been accurate ?
  • If your bill shows an opening and closing meter read then deduct the standing charge from the bill then divide the £ by the units used. That will give a unit charge. Multiply this figure by the units since used to find roughly what you owe. Hard to comprehend how you can leave a hot tap on - kids maybe?

It may be that BG  is over estimating and your DD can go down.

Until you read that meter and do your own sums you won't know.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Irs a false economy by hoping to stay paying estimated bills.

Either you will be owed money (be good to know right,?) Or you will owe money which is what you seem to be avoiding. Its best to increase your DD if this is the case rather than allow a bad situation to get worse.

However it's best to know what you owe else when they take a proper reading themselves you are going to be in for a nasty shock and potentially an unaffordable uplift.

Either way you'll need to read your meter.
