Flooded footpath

  • Large areas of the country have had 2 or 3 times the average rainfall over the past few weeks. On my travels I see flooded areas everywhere.......and it's still raining heavily this week. If it's running off the fields/embankment it's hardly surprising.

It appears it has been like that here since 2021 (at least).

I was expecting to see a made up footway and not a muddy track at the side of the road.  Is it actually a "footpath" or just where people have walked as a shortcut ?

It isn't clear whether the problem is with water coming down the embankment accumulating at the bottom, or with standing water on the carriageway being thrown up and forward onto the verge/footway by passing traffic. (or a combination of both)

Either scenario is almost certainly down to poor maintenance.

We get areas of pooling water on grassed areas after heavy rain, but this is different. It has been flooded for at least a month, maybe longer.
Surely it would naturally drain away, like other soggy areas do. I drive past it most days.

Around here the water isn't draining away. The ground is waterlogged. Need an extended dry period or a burst of warm weather. Or the problems are going to continue to mount.
  • It’s hard to tell from the photograph but it looks like the footpath might be in a shallow valley so rain running down the grass verges will accumulate on the tarmac and if there is no drainage, will take a long time to disappear (effectively evaporation). Possibly a bad design in the first place.

Would disagree the orginal photo everything looks fine.If you look at the two photos the wooden utility pole has moved,I would hazard a guess that when this was done that the drainage system has been damaged. If also the gullies on the road have not been cleared water splashed onto verge will accumulate.
Edit: The pole nearest the roadsigns.

I drove past today and there is water flowing over the grass verge and onto the road. So the drains may be poor, but there is water coming from somewhere. There hasn't been a lot of rain, the banking is quite high.
The council should still make sure that people can walk on the path and not be forced onto the road.

Thanks, but many councils don't accept reports from non council bodies.

Completely agree.  And if the water is coming from the slope then it should be dealt with as a higher priority - water flow and saturated ground associated with an earth slope raises the prospect of slope instability and a possible slip/slide of the slope (with a much higher repair bill) if it isn't investigated and dealt with promptly.
