i had the same problem today with debenhams - my son got a new coat and within a month of wear, the seams on the sleeve have frayed and its bursting open- when i rang a couple of weeks ago i was told to bring it in after christmas. so today i took it back and they refused to exchange or refund until next week.
i know by my visit today that my son will be without a coat as all that was there was in the sale!!!

if the goods are faulty then they have to refund or replace - it doesn't matter if it's sale time or not. Speak to a manager if necessary - you should not come away without those options, you have the Sale of Goods Act on your side. Part time assistants may not be aware of that but the supervisors will.

I think, to be fair, that the policy re returning after Christmas is intended for exchanges and refunds where people just don't like their presents or have changed their mind.

It wasnt faulty and the OP didnt have a receipt, No store has to refund in this situation.

I think dazed was referring to the coat fdss took back, which was faulty, rather than to the OP photo.

Debenhams will only give a refund if you sign up for their store card as they will then take it off your bill. It is a bit of a con! Otherwise they give store credit (a new policy which will hurt there business!)

However, they do give an extra 10% off sale items if you sign up, and there are also vouchers behind the tills, which give £5 off on top of the discount when you spend more than £25 (£28 as they then take off 10%).

Yesterday I got a top for £30 reduced from £60 and then received 10% off (£3), plus £5 off, so paid £22, a discount of 63%

I always ask if a full refund is available rather than store credit when purhasing items, as it happened to be with the CARPHONE WAHREHOUSE...

What you on about ray123. if an item is reduced by 50% or more then you cant get a refund on it, it is exchange only for product or on a gift card. If you have the store card then you can get a full refund.

Debenhams do give refunds, its just they have made it a policy to not accept refunds 2 days after christmas which is understandable because it will be busy and refunds take time to do.

Thank god i wasnt working, because i can just imagine the customers letting off their stress of christmas at the sales assistants moaning that they cant have a refund and how absurbed it is.

If you read the signs around the till which 99% of people fail to do you would know what is to be returned and how and when. Ask the sales assistants, they are there to give info to make youre shopping and returning procedure more easier.

What is with the attitude? I guess you must work in Debenhams?
  • im beginning to despise debenhams, tesco and the like

these are there silly antics which iv noticed all too often

Item A in september cost £30 'normal price'

same Item A in Novemeber now cost £40

In the Boxing Day Sale Item A cost £20 (half price)

50% off the inflated November price but only a 1/3 off the original september price.

Are we getting a bargain or are we being taken for a ride?

Maybe you should buy the item on the 10 December, you can bring it back and but it at the sale price?

At least it keeps the store staff in a job!

The thing was the place was dead! They had plenty of time for refunds.
I've had no trouble in the past when returning gifts, Boots for example are great even without a receipt. Well it puts me off shopping there.

the thing is that the have to stick to their policy otherwise its not fair on customers they refused. They did put notices so it was reasonable.

I'm sure debenhams would allow customers to reserve stock so that they can exchange/refund after Christmas so it's less hassle?
