Not many farmers/animal rearers could afford to let animal die of old age just to appease someones conscience at wearing letrger shoes etcHow does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?0

I don't wear/use leather and don't see why if you are concerned about animal welfare that you see the need to buy a leather sofa.
Farm animals don't die of old age and live extremely short lives in the real world.0 -
Again here we go at people making assumptions.
Why don't you all make some more assumptions about me and the reason behind this post. Go on, you may as well.
neilcr well done for making your first post to mse a post based on fantasy and not facts, your input was as you can tell so well received. Lets hope you go on to make some more equally worthy posts.I saw two shooting stars last nightI wished on them but they were only satellitesIs it wrong to wish on space hardwareI wish, I wish, I wish you'd care0 -

Yet again, when someone makes a perfectly valid point you resort to insulting them - what happened to old fashioned courtesy, especially to a first time poster.0 -
insulting?
You haven't seen me being insulting.
I can't be bothered to reply to you any more so enjoy your moral highground that you think you have over me.
Happy New Year and thank for making your first post of the year to me as tedious as the rest.I saw two shooting stars last nightI wished on them but they were only satellitesIs it wrong to wish on space hardwareI wish, I wish, I wish you'd care0 -
Moonrakerz, wind yer neck in. The lass was just asking a question, no need to get so flippin' sarky. Jesus Effin....... what the hell has happened to MSE in the past few weeks. Folk seem to have forgotten that we work as a team to assist each other, not behave like schoolkids.Debt free since 2014 - now saving for a mortgage deposit :heart2:
This time I'm on top of it! We live and learn :coffee:0 -

Most people on MSE DO work to help each other, as a result it is necessary at times to try and point out to some people, in as nice as way as possible, that what they have posted - to be polite - is not a viable proposition.
Sorry to have to say this, but the question was that which a school kid would ask, not a thinking adult !
Someone mentioned animals that just "pop off" as a source of this leather. If a cow just "pops off" the farmer gets half the Ministry of Agriculture and dozens of vets descend on him and the carcass is usually burnt.
Do anyone really think that someone goes round finding animals that have died a nice peaceful natural death then skins them, and sells the hides to an environmentally friendly furniture maker ?
And, am I to assume that using "Jesus Effin................" in your post is un-schoolkid like ?0 -

No but someone does it to make jackets in the USA. If you look back through the thread there is a link to the site. The idea isn't a silly as some people make out as people have already taken the first steps towards it by producing smaller items.
I don't think the OP means JUST animals that had died of old age, but rather animals that have not been slaughtered for their meat. Horses and cattle that have been injured and need to be put down to stop their suffering etc.
I doubt it would be economical in this country as the supply of skins would be small, but somewhere like the USA where there are a lot more animals and it could be worth it.0 -

That was just my point Joe. It would not be economical in this country, it might be in the US with a much bigger population AND much less intrusive rules about livestock husbandry from the state.
If you wanted a "free range" sofa you could, I daresay, get one hand made here - but don't expect DFS prices for it though !0 -
and was there anywhere in my post that you picked up on that stated that I was talking about DFS prices?

Seriously you have jumped on a band wagon that didn't need jumping on. You still have no idea why I asked this question nor as geordie joe pointed out asked the specifics of the animals in questions nor where I would consider making a purchase from- you just tell me to get in the real world and wonder why I get defensive and ask you not to reply.
Then... you tell me the question was something that a school child would ask. I find this completely offensive and you were and continue to be the one 'mud slinging'. I asked you nicely not to reply as none of your responses are actually answering my question, you are just continually criticising my original post. Which to be honest I don't need. And as you and your fellow posters bar a few on this board all appear to have the higher ground I will not be posting any further questions here. The original question was posed by a 59 year old person who has numerous degrees... far from a schoolchild so perhaps may I suggest to you that your comments were insulting as you didn't ask for any clarification on the subject matter.
MSE on the whole is a friendly, you on the otherhand have created an unfriendly atmosphere ensuring that the veiled insults you hide in your posts are personally offensive.I saw two shooting stars last nightI wished on them but they were only satellitesIs it wrong to wish on space hardwareI wish, I wish, I wish you'd care0
