The marketplaces are in a good position as when inflation drives up prices their cut just gets larger.

I think Etsy have a small fee such as this and whilst the marketplaces are doing certain things, not just the recent topic but they've been managing VAT in some instances for a while now as well as Sales Tax in the US and import tax in Australia plus no doubt other things you'd think they'd be making enough.

Have to say I still find eBay a decent place to buy, usually cheaper than Amazon, granted websites are often cheaper but a lot have min spend for free delivery so if you only need 1 thing eBay works out well.

For private sellers the fees aren't bad, they run a lot of promos and the free listings are a bonus.

I set up a little business last year and so far have spent over £20 on listing fees (not enough to justify a shop yet), the 30p fixed fee is 30p + VAT and this new fee is also 0.35% but + VAT, FVFs can also be higher depending upon the category once VAT is added.

I know a lot of people moan about eBay fees but Etsy are on par, Amazon is more expensive and else anywhere doesn't seem to have as many buyers and I'm sure if they one day did their fees would go up as well.

The fees are already too high,if it weren't for 80% off weekends I wouldn't bother selling.

I'll be interested to see whether the number of items for sale vary a lot once the current - totally free listing for selected private users offer finishes. Lots of talk on other forums and even on the community boards suggesting ebay will be nearly dead once the offer times out in May- but personally I suspect that despite all the moaning and grumbling the actual figures will be relatively unchanged.

We all moan when prices go up, I do it myself, yet we still stay as there is no real competition for a good general sales site online. However, having said that I have really cut back on my listings now, partly as I want to run down to a calmer retirement but also because costs mean I am not prepared to work so hard now to earn just a couple of pounds on an item - I prefer to sell fewer items but keep my prices high. As soon as I start getting massively undercut I just drop the line and let the others get on with it earning pennies in the pound.

So will all private sellers have to pay insertion fees after May?

I doubt it, private sellers haven’t had to pay insertion fees for years. Although with eBay who knows when things will change. .

I think they meant the 0% FVF offer, which more specifically makes it totally free to sell.
