Motor insurance hike - 300%
Options
My car insurance is due in March, and my insurer has sent me a renewal quote.
Last year I paid £360. For the new year it wants £1,026. OUCH!!! OUCH!!!
MoneySuperMarket quoted me around £770 but that's still steep! (Maybe it's because of all those iPads Dame Judi keeps throwing around).
Confused wasn't much better - will try Go Compare and Meerkat soon.
Is it me? Is it because I've retired in the last 12 months (I don't think so - MSM quoted £5 lessfor that (FIVE, not fifty)). No new claims or convictions to report.
Has anyone else had this sort of hike?

Yes me but I'm 83. My quotes were very high but Tesco quoted only a few pounds higher than my previous provider.0

I just had my renewal quote on a 12 plate 1.4 polo and it's DOWN £10 on last year (fully comp, zero excesses, no claims, no changes, me just a year older at 66). I expected a massive hike as others appear to have experienced, but pleasantly surprised.
Try Aviva direct (no telephone support, all online). I don't think they get included on comparison sites. All online.
Good luck.1 -
The elderly and the young seem to be being hit hardest.
My two Uncles - both well in to their 80s - have seen their insurance double since last year to around £1200.
My FIL has had his renewal through - he's 87 - and the best i can get him is £1050, up from £600 last year.
Younger people in performance cars also hit hard. On the enthusiast groups i'm on on FB, some under 30s are seeing premiums go from £1200 a year to £4000!
Mine has went up around 25%, as has my wifes but thats "only" to around £600 and £550 respectively.
Use the MSE insurance tool and follow their guide to cover off all the companies who arent on the main broker sites.0 -
What car are you insuring? Some have been hit hard by high theft rates.0

He's swapped for a Merc GLE, £650 a year.0 -
Just had one of our renewals..it’s gone from £185 to £2110

Mine went from £245 to a best price of £385, which is over 50% increase, with 21 years NCB, early 50's, same address, car etc. I did all the comparison sites and some direct, and some companies emailed from last years shop around. Does seem to be hit and miss, but generally the prices are going up and up.
It may well be that your employed to retired status had some effect but that may depend on what you were employed as. Maybe retired people do more leisure driving during the day so are seen as more of a risk compared to someone commuting to work? Who knows.0 -
That is a good point, if you have retired then remember to change your cover to SD&P rather than SDP&C/Business as you are no longer commuting... normally its a bit cheaper than having commuting.0
