Money not refunded by bank after I was mugged

For those saying to move the banking apps into other folders (I.e not on the Home Screen), there is a search function on phones. It’s easy enough for muggers to search the names of banks on an iPhone and find you have a NatWest app installed, or a Santander one etc.

I don't think you understand how the secure folder works on Samsung at least. I did explain it above. Due to how it functions, normal search does not show any of the apps installed in the secure folder as it's a completely independent install of android to the main android install of the phone.

Unless you weren't talking about the secure folder function anyway.

Of course it doesn't stop the situation of being threatened to reveal the password or whatever of said folder, but it is a step above just trying to hide the apps.
Interesting - thanks for the info. I use an iPhone and despite once being knowledgable about everything tech and phones, I actually didn’t know about that on android phones. I just meant within iPhone folders ‘hiding’ an app would perhaps not work as they can easily search for any app.

Thinking on the topic further I wonder if leaving a second phone at home is that safe either. I've had a relative within the last year have a break in. Fortunately nothing was stolen(though they had to have a door fixed from where they forced their way in), they seemed to think it was because they were specifically trying to find car keys or anything else small but valueable, and left when they couldn't find anything. I wouldn't say the area they live in is known for crime either. Feels like the country is a lot less safe in general at the moment.

I guess one benefit is separating the SMS part which most banks use as security away from the app.

Yeah that's fair. I've not used an iOS device in probably over a decade at this point, so I'm also only knowledgable one side too, hah. It's interesting Apple haven't done something similar considering they always present themselves as doing things for security reasons.

  • You simply cannot mitigate against all eventualities. You might as well just stay at home in case your house is burgled while you are out. It's just a case of being aware of your surroundings and not taking risks.
As for banking apps on your phone, I won't be altering my behaviour on the very, very slight chance I am mugged and held at knifepoint.
I think location is a big factor. If I still lived where I grew up then I would change how my phone is set up with banking apps. The location changed for the worse. I felt safe there at any time, now some places I wouldn't go after dark, and even during daylight it's still a bit iffy.
Llving in a dodgy area then there will always be a more risk no matter what precautions you take.

I am on iPhone with 10 banking apps all face recognition

I can't see how anyone could get into any of them with just my passcode

please say so if i am wrong
in this scenario of course they can get into them - they hold a knife to your throat and say tell you to open the app
I guess you are spot on with that so time to do something about it

I use chase for my everyday shopping via the wallet, theres never much more than £100 in the account

The other banks now I will move to my spare iPhone or even take the spare with me with just the Chase account on.
I think this is basically the best solution. Having zero banking apps is likely to prolong the search/interrogation. Having a low value target on the phone gives them something while protecting the rest. Very much along the lines of a decoy wallet. Banks need to refund in these circumstances if they want people to trust the safety of online/app banking, but when it is a smaller sum at stake it is one less thing to contribute to the overall trauma of the event.
  • I very much doubt, after all that's been said, the OP is likely to come back and tell us the outcome of this episode (with regard to the position the bank takes).
    Shame.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

This thread has definitely got me thinking about phone security and if I NEED all my banking apps on there.

Maybe the alternative is to have all banking apps on there. Only you know which ones are the real ones.I've got 2 pages of bank apps so trying to work out which one has any money in will be a bit of a challenge or at least delay things going through that login process to find there is a zero balance.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

    I like your thinking 😉

    Hide them in plain sight!!
