Refund problems

I have a refund due from Anglian water. The total was 270 in fact. I filled out the form and waited. And waited. So i call them, only to be told that the money had been credited to my account to pay for next year???. I have lived in this house for 3 years, always paid the direct debit on time. Never looked at account before so didn't realize the credit i had built up. So after being told that money has been put forward to next year, there is now only credit of 33.....so where the #$@ has this money, owed to me gone? I have resent an email to the lady asking for it to be returned to me. I had a refund from the electric company of 220 with no problems at all. We have the same set up as Anglian water and pay by direct debit. So why is it so hard to get the water company to cough up!!! I told them in my last email that i would be taking it further.....lets see how long it takes then!!

If they still have the money it's not a refund. What part of that don't they understand?
We're lucky that the water companies here (2 - one in and one out) keep DDs to the minimum and adjust them down automatically so there's essentially never a credit. Don't know why other utilities can't do the same.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. Are you metered or on a rateable value billing system?
Rateable is billed annually in advance, with DD taken to spread the cost, I believe. I've been metered since 2006.
https://faq.anglianwater.co.uk/article/qed2120/when-is-my-bill-due
Check your online account to see the details of your Bills etc.,.
Metered is billed in a similar fashion, with DD credit built up to pay for actual annual meter reads. (In my case around June each year) and the DD amount recalculated to be sufficient for the next annual bill.
I can submit my own meter reading online if I want an up to date Bill.
My AW metered balance today has a credit of around £210 but the Bill total is expected to be £288 by June for 23-24 consumption. I'm a very low user (ca. 36 cu m per annum).
So your £270 "credit" won't go far with Anglian's water and sewerage annual charges.
Note that most energy companies bill in arrears.
Telecomms/ISPs are in advance, as is Council Tax.
You could go to Annual Billing rather than pay via DD instalments?
