Thats funny @daveyjp because there is explicitly a Transit Visa https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/other-visa-categories/transit.html for those with passports not entitled to ESTA

There are no airside transits, you always have to go through immigration before transiting but this lower class of visa that limits your movement and time in the US does exist as an alternative for a fuller visa for a holiday there or multi-entry.

Personally would go with the Foreign Office over a random commercial website https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/ecuador/entry-requirements 

Whilst the OP is arriving by plane we don't know their travel plans once there, if it included a land border cross out of and back into Ecuador then they'd need a criminal record certificate which the other site fails to mention.
