    Hi hon

My, you asked for a kick and you certainly got one from some! some responses came across a little smug, IMHO.

Don't feel bad. Its a blip. Just dont make a habit of it. Enjoy the sofa - vow no more expensive purchases for the house for a good long while and get back on the money saving way!

Not to make light of your debts but whats done is done and theres no point beating yourself up about it. Sure, you should have shopped around, thought about it etc but we all make these purchases that seems like 'must haves' at the time. Afterall, no-ones perfect. We all have our achilles heel - those who say 'OMG I'd never pay that for a sofa' have theirs too I'll bet - be it holidays, the latest tv or games console, or just those little beer/cigerette/coffee/magazine habits. We all have something, I certainly do - so dont let others make you feel bad. We all have these blips, we're only human after all!

Lorian - Blakes 7?! Bit confused ... sorry, maybe I'm having a blonde moment here! lol

barron - Are you calling me young and silly :D lol ?! The OH is a little older than me actually (think late 20s / early 30s), but he lived at home for quite a while longer than most people (not coz he's sad, I should hasten to add! lol - but he has elderly parents & I think felt guilty to want to move out!) so I suppose he hasn't needed to pay rent, bills etc in quite the same way as we do now ... he always paid his parents a few hundred £s in rent / keep but it's not the same if u see what I mean?

tealady - I don't want to seem like I'm patronising him by snowballing his CC's and cost of interest etc, any ideas on how I can go about this? I think it would help us to work together on this ... I know I need to get all of my debt onto 0% for definite if I have any chance of doing this next year! *is determined* ... hmm, now how to not sound like I'm nagging him? lol

ISOM - it was over 5 days ago ... I've just been too much of a chicken to confess before now lol! But thankyou :o

And also thankyou all who are being nice to me about it, not sure I deserve it lol but still :o

Will update in a bit with money saving efforts, need to have some dinner right now, will try to get back online later 2nite

Another DFW night in ... just been round to my friend's for a cup of tea & a gossip lol ... and I walked there & back so no transport fees either! What a wild Saturday night, I know how to live, me! ;)

I've finally managed to find my voucher (offer for taking out a Barclaycard and making 1 purchase) and sent it back, it's for £50 at Boots, so that's going towards my free Xmas 08 challenge! Oh and I paid off the 1 purchase in full today so that's done, card is now hidden in a drawer so can't use it.

I was thinking about cancelling it ... I asked them about BT's (for my CC # 2 as it's high interest!!) and they said the best they can do is 6.9% LOB, which isn't bad, but isn't great either. Any help / advice would be really nice ... I might try for a 0% one if I do cancel this one, my credit rating is pretty OK so I think it would go through ... at the moment I pay £10 a month and it's only gone down by about £12 in 4 months!!

I've paid my sister back £5 today so the sig is going down ... I really want to pay more but I have to focus on CC # 1 first ... only 5 months and just over £1700 to go  ... I thought I was doing well having paid off nearly £700 since August, but now it doesn't feel nearly enough!

I've used my Xmas money from various aunties & uncles for my matched betting fund ... £50 is there ready and waiting. I think I'll open a new acc specifically for that though ... maybe one with cashback - towards my Olympic challenge of course ;) ... must get cracking on that! And changing leccy provider, and changing house ins deals ... argh ... *wanders off muttering about being more organised in 2008*

    Hi Jenna

Just to say, it might not have been the smartest move but if I remember rightly from a previous thread the sofa issue had been burning for a couple of months, so although expensive it wasn't entirely a rash purchase - and it seems to have given you even more motivation to get rid of those debts. So it may not all be bad news - and you have a new sofa:T (very jealous because we have a nasty metal framed sofa bed thing from the landlady, my bum is going numb as I type!)

Good luck with the debt busting! x

Jenna I'm in a similar position excapt mine hasn't happened yet! I've got £2500 of debt, OH has '3 times that' he says (we've just moved in together) and instead of my portable he wants to buy a £400 32" LCD TV for us to watch DVD's on! Another £200 each! I already owe him £300+ from the furniture he bought when we moved in!

Hey Catt, true the TV is expensive, do u have one already? I ask because (as you can see from my sig) we got a TV when me and the OH moved in together ... that was closer to £1k and we paid it off in 9 months.

Some of the people who posted earlier in this thread will no doubt be horrified but ... because of that TV, we've stayed in a lot more, and have saved a lot of money by not going to the pub / a restaurant etc as we normally would have done. Just a thought but it really depends on how much u would use it etc!

Pls don't take this as encouragement to spend loads on the TV btw it isn't meant that way!! lol

In my case we already have the TV and have no excuse for the sofa!

Sorry for the thread hijack, but
SKINT CATT have a look on freecycle, especially now, as lots of people will have upgraded to plasma screens for christmas, and so there now might be a lot of tv's on the groups?

Jenna never mind about the sofa, you now have a challenge to save the money for it!!!

    New Year, New Start!

I am determined that this will be the year I pay off my debts. And not by throwing every spare penny at them and then leaving myself short for holidays or Christmas (resulting in more debt), but by being logical about what I can pay and planning things out - for once!

I'm trying to have as many NSDs as possible - today was my first one of the year, begin as you mean to go on and all that! My OH has also made lots of delicious pasta for dinner tonight, and will take the spare to work tomorrow to heat up in the microwave - I also have a mince pie for my pudding lol, we STILL have some left over from Xmas! So hopefully tomorrow will be a NSD too.

Packed lunches will be a big challenge for me this year, but the De-Motivator says I'm currently spending £1,040 each year on them! So must, MUST make my own food for work - even if I am exhausted at the end of the day, even if it's just simple sandwiches or something.

Back at work tomorrow & will try and do some OT - even if just 45 mins or an hour (may be painful the first day back after Christmas, but I have to get going on this!).

Will try and do more housework too ... the theory being that if I can work in the day (with PACKED lunch! lol) and clean the house / do proper cooking and menu planning / sleep a decent 8 hours a night I won't have the time or energy to spend money! Lets see if it works!

On that note, I'd better get some sleep! Got to be at my desk at 8.30am tomorrow! Happy New Year all! xx
