    There's some nasty responses here.....

Everyone with debt has bought something they can't afford - so really everyone in this particular forum should surely be supporting rather than judging?

You know you'll be able to deal with your debts better now that you're comfy don't you? Its a proven fact so ignore the know it alls with their cheap seating and don't dwell on it.

I think I need a good kick up the bum!!

I've had a perfectly good last few months since August ... done lots of overtime at work, paid off lots (CC in particular is done from nearly £2,500 to £1,720 ish and TV loan is gone altogether - yey!) and tried very hard to ignore OH's seemingly eternal need to spend, spend, spend.
From what it sounds it's not just your OH's need to spend... I'm in the same boat as you.. OH constantly wanting the latest gadget or having the feel of money burning a hole in his pocket (when he has it anyway).

BUT if it had been me there is not way I would've justified that much on a sofa... we got ours from £200 from argos :)

BUT that's not my point. Everyone has made daft purchases they later regretted. And there's not much you can do about it now unless you can take it back. Pay it off before the 0% period and learn from this lesson.

you both need to work together and make each other realise you can't afford certain things..

We all slip up now and then, its nearly a new year "new start".We are going to try and start fresh in the new year and really get our debts down.
Look at the debts you have managed to pay off "WELL DONE"
Maybe a spending diary would help you track your spending.
See the new year as getting back on track and hopefully you will find some motivation and determination to finally pay off your debt.GOOD LUCK.

  • Think you have had the kick you need from the others! For next year, how about setting a cash limit for the 'things for the house' part of the gift, and prove you've learned your lesson by sticking to it?

And the good news is-you know you shouldn't have done it! Think about all those people who don't know how much Christmas has cost them yet *shudders* and think that it's normal to buy everything on credit...at least yours is 0%.
  • Please Please pay it off as soon as you can I did the same in 1997 two leather sofas I still havent paid it off I owe more on it now than the sofas were in the first place with interest for non or late payments now Ive had the intrest frozen and paying it of a pound a month.
And the thing is I cant stand the sight of the thing now, its old and knackered.
I wish i kept getting second hand ones at least you can change your mind get rid of it and get another for nearly next to nothing!!

Thankyou all, I am now considering myself well and truly kicked and feel thoroughly rubbish about getting the damn thing! I do think one or two comments were a little harsh (the one about my sister did cut a bit deep), but there again no doubt I deserved it. A few comments in reply and to clarify things, then:

For those of you saying I should return it - I can't take it back, I already signed a contract on the re-payments. And for those saying my flat obv looks like a "changing rooms" programme, it doesn't - I'm not the type of person who replaces things every 6 months for the "in" colour (for example, I still have the same wardrobe now I had when I was 14 - a nice plain beech one - which is now 7 years old!).

I might also make the point that I don't earn "like a pauper" - I work very hard and got a new job this year with a £2.5k raise (compared to what I was earning before) plus paid overtime ... so I will be able to "afford" my half of the re-payments, even though in an ideal world (and were I not so stupid) I would be able to put this money towards paying back the debts I already have.

But, I think the essential point you are all trying to make (some more gently than others!) is that I shouldn't have bought such an expensive thing whilst in debt and I have to agree with that as "the bottom line".

IA - when I said about my OH wanting to spend, I didn't mean just the sofa ... he's spent about £1k on his CC since September on "stuff" and seems to think that's normal. It's not that he can't afford things, he's got a raise at work this year and could even start paying things back off his debt, but there's no LBM flickering as far as I can tell. He owes me money, too ... in the New Year we've agreed to put some bills e.g. house ins in his name so he is gradually paying me back (I can then use the cash I would have spent on the bill to pay onto my CC). I'm not saying that I'm perfect by any means, just that he can be very frustrating to live with - I try to be "good" and do lots of overtime and not spend much, where he just spends without pre-planning it and enjoys himself - it's like trying to go on a diet and living with a Chef! lol

Thankyou to those of you who suggested joining challenges in the New Year & trying to use it as motivation to pay off my debts even quicker, I think that's a really good idea. As I said I can't take it back now, so I can only try and learn some useful from it.

I joined the Olympic challenge and am aiming for Bronze - that will be coming straight off the debt (fingers crossed I will make my target figure!). And I have joined the free Xmas 08 thread, I have already got a £10 Pigsback voucher and £4.84 in Boots points. It's not much yet but step by step I will get there!

I have spent several hours learning about matched betting which is what I will be doing mostly to try and get my total debt down next year, and also been over to the Old Style board to try out a menu plan for January - I am too lazy with food, I just feel so tired after work but no more excuses!

I think I've become too lazy and complacent about the whole DFW thing and even though am lots better than in previous times (thank goodness!) there is still masses that I could do better. *slaps wrists*

Thankyou all again for the nag :D
