It says penalty charge on it.

It also says 'Northern Ireland'. We didn't know that earlier.
The rules/laws are different there. You have a different challenge.2 -
Oh ok. I only posted really to warn others to double check if they are using a parking app. I was late for an appointment and probably didn't check.1

This also happened to me on 18 June 2024 whilst on holiday in The Lakes. Tried to park at a remote car park near Threlkeld that displayed notices with instructions to 'call this number' to download the RingGo app.
Tried several times , giving credit card then debit card details before the penny dropped. Realised it must be a scam because each time instructions were gabbled off over the phone so rapidly I was never sure I'd entered exact details correctly.
Clearly this was all part of the scammer's plan to create confusion and panic. Went back to main notice and phoned number at foot of board. succeeded in paying the parking fee without using app, but later discovered three junk emails informing me I'd been charged 3 £1.00 'registration' fees and 3 more scam emails claiming I'd agreed to membership fees for different sites each of which will charge me £59.99.
So first off phoned credit company who blocked card and payments saying they would send replacements in post, then phoned my bank who likewise blocked payments and said ok to continue using debit card but need to keep checking statements for future scam charges. So far, 3 weeks on, no suspect payments detected.

This happened to me over weekend at a cat park in Richmond North Yorks. Downloaded the Ringo app, paid the £1 and thought it had taken me to the pay for parking site.Didn't realise it had taken me to another site where I appear to have signed up for a free trial to weightlifting. I gave up and paid cash for parking. Then this morning I got an email that they were taking £59.99 after a 5 day free trial followed by £24.99 each month. I got straight onto my bank who said that there had already been an attempt to take the £59.99 which they had refused as they thought it was a scam. I've cancelled my card to stop this company taking any more money. I'll be keeping a stash of coins to park in future.2

Just read this thread, which doesn't seem to have any conclusions, just a number of people who appear to have been scammed.
While not impossible, I think it unlikely that the genuine RingGo app is doing this. Advice when faced with having to pay via an app, especially a new app you haven't used (or heard of) before.- Never use a QR code to get the app, RingGo says they never use them. If you have, you could well have been directed to a fake app that looks like the genuine article. Always search for, verify and download the app via the appstore on your phone.
- I have never been asked to pay a subscription charge for RingGo or any other parking app - another red flag that says "scam".
- Always double check that the car park code is correct. When you enter it into the app, it will say what car park and where. It should match where you actually are.
- If there is an option to pay by credit card at the car park, do so in preference to an app.
- If the whole setup looks dodgy, it probably is, so go somewhere else

Sounds and reads like a QR code scam. I have never paid for a parking app subscription. The parking app fee is paid when you pay for parking.1

Why are people so keen to use unknown QR codes? It could be any old scam.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
