  • They may have taken the in house display, but they won’t have removed the meter itself, so you can still read the meter.
  • Do you mean the monitor thing that sits in your house? You can still read the meters themselves. If you are not sure where they are your energy provider should be able to tell you.

The electricity meter looks something like this

Gas meter normally looks something like this.

You sometimes have to press some buttons to get the reading in kWh or m3.

I’ve heard lots of people incorrectly refer to the energy monitor thing as the smart meter itself.

And if the smart meters work with your energy supplier(s) then there'll be no need to take and submit readings anyway as they are sent from the meters, the in house display has nothing to do with automated submission (mine has been unplugged and sat in a drawer for at least the last 5 years).

Maybe not on a regular basis, but you'd absolutely want to take starting readings when moving into a property, as the OP is trying to do.

Which as explained you can do off of the actual meter itself without the need for the In House Display.

The OP needs to come back and confirm that there is power in the property, so the meter is still connected and it is the IHD which has been removed.

If that is the case, then they need to find the actual meter itself to take the reading.

Unlikely they will get the energy supplier to provide a new IHD so something like the bright app on their phone may be the next best thing.

But need the confirmation that there is power and its the IHD which is missing.

I was curious about this, and it seems that it is easy to buy a replacement IHD for less than £50. (There are second hand options as well). I presume that there is some way to make it connect with the actual smart meter. The £50 is from EDF, my current energy suppliers, and it looks a slightly better model they are selling compared to the one they gave me when the installed my smart meter.

Prices for a new IHD went down to about £15, but I think that was one of those not too confidence inspiring cheap electrical stuff online sites.
