Stud wall in my council house

Hello, could I build a stud wall in my newly rented council house without permission.

    Seems unlikely. What does your tenancy agreement say about alterations?

    Practically, certainly yes! 

    When we had a Council flat, from the early 1950s, a Caretaker lived in the block, and knew what was going on. They had a grip. 

    Fast forward 70 years and I suspect that the Council probably doesn’t even know who half of the occupants are or whether they are the people whose names are on the rent book (not that rent books still exist…)

    so I know what I’d do… especially as it won’t hurt anyone…

    If you are making a sensible alteration, then the council probably won't care. If you are making a small room into 2 very small rooms so you can squeeze in a sub tenant or have an extra room for AirBnB, the council won't be happy. Why not ask for permission?
  • Personally I think this is one of the situations that may fall into the ‘do it and apologise after if needed’ category

    You say newly rented, if it's been less than 12 months since you took on the tenancy there maybe restricts on what exactly you can do within those 12 months. 

    I rent from social housing and took the tenancy on a week before Christmas and I have to wait for 12 months before I can make any changes to my home (with the exception of decorating) after this time I must ask for permission and if granted they will put it in writing. 

    For those reasons you need to check your tenancy agreement.

    That depends on what "it" is.

    If it is a separate room benig created then who will be checking to make sure the means of escape is adequate, that control of spread of smoke and flame isn't compromised, that the room has adequate ventilation, and who is going to do what with the electrics to service the newly created room?

    Lots of questions, the answers will determine whether the alterations create a risk (greater than existing) of someone being 'hurt', or killed.
