OP If you do need a new one, the only one under £300 recommended by Which? is Indesit MTWC 91295 (9kg 1200 spin)
Currently £280 @ Appliances Direct but also available elsewhere

Another vote for Beko.  Just replaced a 12 year old that has had an absolute hammering over the years.   Got another Beko from AO delivered next day for under £300.

I've always been of the mind that an £800 washer isn't going to get your clothes any cleaner, and, spending that kind of money you are "invested" in it so if it goes wrong in 7 years time you're inclined to repair it. I, on the other hand, would just go and buy another cheap one.

Could the burning smell be from burning rubber, caused by a drive belt problem?

Thanks for the advice, I've bought a new Beko washing machine, arriving Tuesday.
  • We've had a few machines over the 30 years in this house. I'd say it has only been in the last 15 years that we've stopped getting repairs done. Our first washer lasted for a good 10 years and it was bought second hand, and it was usually the bushes (?) that went. We knew an old guy who fixed them and it didn't cost a lot. Last machine was about 5 years old, the computer had a fit and it stopped working, and wasn't worth fixing.

Replacing the bushes on the motor is one of the easy/not too costly repairs, that is usually worth doing.

I think the brushes :-) are the only thing I've ever known to be fixed on a washing machine, not my area of knowledge, but they always seemed to be the first thing to go.
