Can they just close the account without defaulting it first?
All "account closure" means is that they have stopped your access to it, defaulting is the final step, check your credit reports, any default will clearly show on the file entry, along with the date it defaulted.

Standard default notice always asks for the full balance within 14 days or a default will be registered against your account.

But some of the debts show 4 missed payments but no default. Don't they just turn into CCJ's?

No -nothing can just turn into a ccj. There has to be a court claim, which you would respond to.

Before that there has to be a pre-action letter with standard form and 30-day reply time. We recommend that you respond to that one.

Creditors have 6 years to start a claim from the default date, and only a small proportion ever do. So in your situation I wouldn't worry about it
