Just thought I'd leave an update. Thames Water came out to investigate and discovered that the meter recording my high usage is not actually the meter that serves my property. It is, as suspected, for the flat upstairs. So, I have been billed for the last three years for someone else's usage.
The correct meter for my property has been located and Thames Water tell me they will update my account with it shortly. I will then have to take two readings a week apart for them to recalculate my past and future usage.
Does that sound right?
I expect once our accounts are registered with the correct meter serial numbers, and their leakage is repaired, they will have to take two separate readings to gage average normal daily usage, apply for a leak allowance to write off the recorded wastage and then get re-billed. A bit of a headache.
So relieved to have an explanation for my extortionate bill. It's not mine!0 -
My friend had this, wrong meter allocated to the wrong new house. They asked him to send photos of the meter each week for 6 weeks so they could work out a pro rata refund rate.He went off to his mums every day for a shower, only flushed the loo once a day or after number 2.Did one load of washing a week. and used the dishwasher once a week also. Plus one or two showers. His bill was so low, Ha Ha.Masiff refund.Even better was the G&e meters were registered to the wrong house.3 years later it was still not resolved when he moved out.He could not pay the bill until it was in his name, they did not have his name so could not change the name.3 years free G&E.10 years on and still not heard from them.1

Have to agree with Bigwheels re water use. Minimise wherever possible, rainwater can be used for flushing loo (or washing upnwater). I would also stand in a bowl (or large tray) when showering to capture as much water as possible.
Also try to minimise washing clothes. After all as Mr T says "every little helps".
Of course once the bill is corrected things can go back to normal!Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)1
