I'm not impressed or happy that these can be set up without my knowledge!
No means of deleting them either. They are not showing in the mobile app..
Nothing's been "set up without your knowledge". They've just made the details easily available, should you want /need to make a payment.

They're showing in my mobile app.

This really isn't anything worth fretting over.

I've just looked in my Halifax app: "Send Money to" then "Pay new" brings me to a screen where I can choose to pay an individual/company, an international account or the new, third option, pay HMRC.

At worse it's just an option to ignore, at best it's an extra thing that may help people avoid being scammed by dodgy entities claiming to be HMRC.

"have you asked the bank who sanctioned this to be set up?"
Refer to my post. They apparently don't know.

The list is visible in the app for me.  I have no issues with it being there.

Just because you are not a conspiracy theorist it doesn't mean that big brother is not watching you B)
Just found it on my Lloyds app.  Nothing sinister at all, actually quite a good idea if it helps to make sure that payments get to the correct place.  As for asking front line CS staff who sanctioned it, how do you expect them to know - all they know is what the screen tells them.   A great big fuss over nothing important.

HMRC are on a lot of banks pre-populated business payees including HSBC and NatWest current accounts along with councils, credit cards, utilities, and TV licence. I'd be more worried by sending money to Capita/BBC than HMRC.
edit: couldn't find them on Cumberland, maybe they don't pay tax up there.

They are what as know as Major beneficiaries. Pre populated to stop scams.
Banks takes lots of calls around these payments, that can easily be done online. But many people are scared they will get the details wrong.

No idea why a bank staff member would not know this. Been around for years online with some banks.

There is no way from this that HMRC will be able to monitor your account. Just the same as any other payee you have set up can not check your bank account 😶‍🌫️

As everyone else has said...but probably not fitting in with the narrative the OP proposed so you won't get thanked for it.

Excuse me but i found your response i would not like the narrative to be offensive. I asked the question because this has never been on my bank accounts. I use online banking and know how it works. If suddenly something that has done this would you not query it.  And as the DWP has announce that it would be monitoring certain bank accounts for fraud i thought it could be linked., I asked for people thoughts and was reassured with their answers.  And i did thank someone for their answer. But thank you for your input.
