HMRC ON BANK ACCOUNTS.

My bank has added a new person to pay account. . Clicking on it gives me the sort codes for different departments of HMRC  to pay money to. Has any one found this on their bank accounts. I think it may be something to do with DWP who might be looking at bank accounts. I don't claim any means tested  benefits, so it is a worry they can do this.  If any one can shine a light on this please do.

  • I would be interested to know also, as I noticed it on my bank account recently.

Could it just be that some of the more 'popular' payees have been added as a shortcut?

Not sure where you are looking to be seeing this but certainly all of our accounts have preset sort code and account numbers for various large companies and governmental departments like HMRC so if you need to make a payment to them you select them from the list and add your reference number rather than having to type in the account details.

In principle its such that if HMRC were to change banks then all customers could be updated centrally rather than everyone having to remember to change it themselves

Which bank? Lloyds, Halifax or BoS? A button that takes you to a list of common HMRC accounts was added but it's just to try to help people send money to the right account. For years banks have also had these for e.g., credit cards and utility companies. It's no big deal.

It's to help you setup a payment TO them quickly

    They aren't

  • The idea is that you are less likely to fall for a scam where a fraudster has sent you a payment request with non-HMRC bank details, or send to the wrong place due to a typo.

You will either notice the payment details don’t match and it might make you stop and think, or at the worst, you send money to HMRC that was not needed - but you’ll get it back eventually.

"Has any one found this on their bank accounts."
Yes, accessing my Club Lloyds account on a laptop has the same list.
I have just phoned lloyds and they haven't a clue what it is. "Not showing on our system."
I'm not impressed or happy that these can be set up without my knowledge!
No means of deleting them either. They are not showing in the mobile app..
Checked my Co-op account's payees and not there. Looks to be a Lloyds thing at the moment?

"have you asked the bank who sanctioned this to be set up?"
Refer to my post. They apparently don't know.

The list is visible in the app for me.  I have no issues with it being there.
