    What about a Honda Jazz?
Small, economical, can get a auto, clever seats in the rear.
No better ride height than a Fiesta though.

Jazz was my first thought too.
Maybe worth looking at the Fiat 500L.

But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

I thought about the 500L but they came with Fiats Dualogic automated manual gearbox if you wanted a two pedaler.
So drive badly and totally unreliable.

Plus, they were based Fiat B platform from the Punto, so they are pretty old and crude in today's market.

Toyota Sienta or perhaps some other JDM product. Which means min 5 years old (although likely low mileage) and potential parts issues. (Before anyone says, yes I know the Sienta is technically a 7 seater but the 3rd row of seats stows away in a very clever and totally unobtrusive way and the middle seat of the 50/50 splitting row two is purely theoretical)

Seat Leon / Skoda Octavia (maybe ST). Longer wheelbase, plenty of rear leg room. Their 1.5TSI / 2.0TDI will do excess of 50mpg on a motorway run

Thanks again but all these cars have the 3 child seats in the back and we need 2 adult seats. Here is the Leon boot to see what i mean look how narrow the single seat is.

If there are only 2 adults in the back, then you can just ignore the middle seat. They aren't individually adjustable so you'd treat it as a single bench anyway.

Or are you specifically looking for something that only has 4 seats, because that pretty much leaves you with the big executive saloons. The Vauxhall Vivaro Life / Citroen Traveller can be specced with 2 captains seats in the 2nd row, but the boot on those will definitely be too big.
