Cancelling BT contract in partners name and reopening in my name?

Options
Hi all, bit of advice needed. Currently with BT and have been for several years. Our broadband contract is with BT and we pay £65 a month – it was only recently renewed in September when we moved house, so getting out of it is probably going to cost me a £££ fortune.

But we can upgrade to 900mb Fibre for free. Our BT contract is in my wife's name. So could we potentially upgrade to Fibre – which then starts a new 24mnth contract. Then within the 30-days cooling-off period; cancel the contract without paying any cancelation fee?

Not actually bothered about leaving BT but ideally we would cancel and then become a new customer under my name and get the same service for a new customer price.

Any advice greatly appreciated. Cheers.

  • Doesn't work. When you upgrade and then cancel the contract reverts to the one that was in place before the upgrade.

Is there a 30 day cooling off for an upgrade or is it the same as a renewal?

Thanks both – I thought I could be smart. I’ll still try and haggle when it comes to the upcoming price-rise. But I think they’ve got me for a while because it's t doessuch a new contract.

It does say 24-month contract and does say 30-days cooling off so I’m presuming that even though its an upgrade to us, they still say 24-months contract from when the upgrade happens.

I think you can only cancel the contract when it comes to an end, which I presume will be September 2025. At that point you can probably cancel the contract and take out a new customer contract in your name. £65 a month just for broadband is shockingly high though.
