Barclays Bereavement Team need to do better!

Just a heads-up to anyone suffering a bereavement, and have used the Barclays online bereavement tool to log a death. You'll receive an email confirming the ordering of a cheque book - addressed to your recently lost loved one. Apparently its a 'glitch' in the system. An attempt to make a formal complaint receives no assurance that this system error will be fixed to spare anyone else this stress.

  • Sorry to hear that.  Must be a glitch as I haven't had any problems with the Barclays online bereavement tool.

I didn’t experience any glitches, but when my husband died, and I informed them a few weeks later, they only gave three months grace on a credit card he had with them before they said they would start adding interest again.

I found this odd given that other credit card companies are happy to wait for Probate. He only owed around £500 on the Barclaycard so I just paid it off after some money came in from current and savings account balances.

Comparatively, when I called NatWest with an update when probate was granted, they had a much more relaxed attitude telling me there was no rush and that they understood these things took time, etc etc. They even said I could make monthly payments if I wanted rather than pay off in one go.

I had quite a good experience with Lloyds. With that said it was an current account my husband barely used with a few hundred pounds in and an empty savings account.

Within days of me emailing or uploading the death certificate (I can’t remember which) they’d written a letter confirming date of death and final balances and transferred the money to me. I don’t recall them even asking for proof that I was his wife or executor (although they could likely confirm the first via a soft credit check). I was also named as his wife in the death certificate so that likely simplified things.

As with many of these things, it can simply depend on who you happen to speak to or contact at an organisation. For example, when my mother died, banks, building society, DWP were fine, the person I had to deal with at Probate Office was a nightmare.
