Octopus stopped charging for gas.
Hello energy experts!
So in December Octopus (ex bulb) reduced my monthly direct debit from £147 to £104. I had a log stove installed last year and have been using it most evenings so I assumed this what the reason, although the drop in payments were much bigger than I expected!
Yesrerday I happened to check a bill and noticed that gas wasn't mentioned at all. Just electricity.
I went back through previous bills and October 2023 was that last bill which includes gas. So for 3 months I've been paying nothing for gas.
I checked my meter reading history and they are taking half hourly readings for gas and I can see my usage and estimated annual cost.
Anyone have any idea whats going on?
And what should I do about it?
1. Nothing, but keep in mind ill probably get huge gas bill soon!?
2. Or should I tell them?
3. Pipe cheap gas to my neighbours for a huge profit?

If the readings are being sent and you can see them then sadly option 3 would just cost you lots of money.
For me I would tell them as I like to get bills out the way, however some might stash the money it will cost in an interest bearing account and wait for them to notice.

I have the same thing with octopus, I need to tell them each month ..
so in your position I would tell them before the bill becomes very large1 -
Oh its probably a common error then. Im not going through the hassle of telling them each month. Ill stick in the £50 a month in a savings account until they ask for it.Tony5896 said:I have the same thing with octopus, I need to tell them each month ..

I'm another vote for "give Octopus a nudge". You might find that, once you point it out, they fix it and billing goes back to normal.

This is obviously a glitch, but you should not ignore it. You don’t need to keep reporting it, but you should report what is going on now. Don’t stick £50 away each month put away enough to cover what you are actually using.Sg28 said:

It happened at my aunts. I rang through the readings for a couple of months and then it resolved itself. It could be a right pain to resolve if you let it run on. Just contact them and get it sorted.

If you are on a standard tariff for gas, could just add a reading on the webpage. That’ll probably kick off a bill within a few days
guessing they are not getting gas readings for whatever reason. If you are on a smart tariff, ask them to try to pull the meter readings manually.Price changes complicate matters too - if the price has changed whilst they’ve not billed you, they’ll estimate how much you used at the old and new rates. So pulling the meter data may be a good idea to get accurate billing.PPI success. Banding success. Double Dip PCN cancelled! South facing solar (Midlands) and battery. I have just had to remind Octopus that I have had no electric charges on my bill since last September.
They said if one half hour reading gets missed this can happen. Plums.
I've now been told I owe £755 ...!
Smart meters my !!!!!!.....!1 -
You've continued paying your monthly DD during that period so most of that £755 should be covered by your Octopus account balance?njkmr said:I have just had to remind Octopus that I have had no electric charges on my bill since last September.

Or are you a pay-on-receipt-of-bill customer, in which case the £755 will still be in your bank account?

I have had problems with my SM2 meters communicating with Octopus. Had a powercycle in Jan 24 and told all well as now getting readings every 30 mins even though this does not show on my Octopus dashboard - in fact days missing!.
Got a SM2 read elec bill on 7th Feb but no gas bill. Had to read Gas Meter and submit to get a bill. Interested to read that 'missed readings' from the SM2 may stop bill generation - even on a SVT?
Have just emailed customer services to ask why no Gas Bill if they are getting readings? I would have expected an estimated one at least!
