in Credit cards
Hi,
Sorry, might go on a bit.
So I believe I'm pretty careful round all this stuff, even bordering on paranoid
On 6th Feb I had a letter arrive from xxxbank that was giving me my new PIN for my new xxxbank credit card (this has never been seen). Not banking with xxxbank I rang them up suspecting something dodgy. After speaking with the fraud team for some time it seems someone has setup an account in my name. A fraud case was started. I also agreed that if the needed to contact the police they could.
I then check Experian through my MSE link and theres only the normal searches that relate to insurers and new car loan that were expected so didnt initially panic.
Having then check transunion and equifax I can see a search for affordability for xxxbank as well as 2 loan companies and another bank but these just appear to be quotations and affordability searches and later an application. Theres sniffs under transunion too. I can also see that someone has set themselves up with a different email address to mine at credit checking agency. I've started an investigation there and they said they have blocked that email address/access and will block any future ones.
I've also signed up with protective registration at Cifas for the next 2 years. Has anyone got any good reviews for doing this? I understand there will need to be more thorough checks for any new applications etc. But it shows Im asking for this to be done.
Anything else I should do? Reading the reviews of ActionFraud reports its dire.
Im also awaiting the report from XXXbank but fully intend to do a DSAR after I get it to try and find out what was used.
I'm also looking to seek recompensed for the stress this has caused me as well and many wasted hours with setup up credit reference agency accounts, emails and phone calls back and fourth and the cost of Cifas registration.
Any one else been through similar experiences please?
Sorry, might go on a bit.

Now that the bank has been informed you not need to worry about the card - it will never be used.
The only one thing to consider is - is there anybody close to you either as a friend or family member that would know enough about you to be able to try and impersonate you?

Considering who the bank is and the application was 10 days ago, there is the possibility you wouldnt need to PIN to go on a spending spree as you can activate the card from withing the banks own app and it would also tell you the card number and CCV number. Maybe thats why they chose this particular bank?
No one I've not known for the last 20 plus years to be honest and dont see too much of family or they are deceased.1 -
sorry to hear this has happened to you it can be very stressful
on the subject of compensation i doubt if you will get any from the bank you are not even thrir customer
The only person you could realistically get compensation from is the person who opened the card3 -

Even if you were, you would not find out what details were used, as that is all system based & not recorded.Life in the slow lane0 -
If my name was used though, surely I have the right to see where my name was used even if it wasnt me that used it?
Not too sure why, as they let the account get setup, I should have all the man hours and cost to try and rectify?0 -

But its not 'Your' name is it? Im sure there are many others from a population of 8 billion with the same name.

true, but very unlikely that they have the same date of birth as me and live at my address!
which is what must have been used to open the account.

As I mentioned before you need to think about the possibility of someone who knows you well enough to impersonate you.1 -
Well now down as Victim of Impersonation and I put protective registration via Cifas on all the 3 credit reports. Dont think I'll find out how they got in but I think one of the CRA partners was involved as they showed a dodgy email address registered already. They have since locked it. No more searches completed.
Just shows banks dont really check on details to much for this to have been opened and dont helpful with letting you know how it was done after.0
